Elementary School Outreach

In 2000 CAMA decided to address the fact that the gradual elimination of music education in the public schools since the 1970s has deprived young children of the opportunity to learn about music and its important place in our culture. In January of that year CAMA adopted a new mission statement that includes a strong commitment to music education: “Our mission to serve the community includes a commitment to expand and enrich audience appreciation and education and to offer associated music outreach programs to the widest possible audience.”

In 2001, working with the administration of La Patera Elementary School and the Goleta Union School District, CAMA devised a music pilot program to be integrated into La Patera’s regular curriculum and designed to reach all children in the school beginning in the Fall of 2001. CAMA's goals for this program were to introduce children to the fundamentals of music and acquaint them with important musical traditions and historic composers from around the world.

Based on the success of the La Patera School program, CAMA made the decision to make classical music appreciation programs available to elementary schools throughout the South Coast region. Beginning in September 2003 CAMA began development of a systematic curriculum package entitled A Classical Music Journey for Young People. Consultant musicologist Dr. David Malvinni produced the curriculum under the supervision of the CAMA Education Committee chaired by UCSB Professor of Music Dr. Dolores Hsu. Twenty-four units have been produced over the last three academic years. The curriculum is designed especially for grades 4 through 6, but is adaptable to junior high schools as well.

Each unit consists of a PowerPoint® presentation on a CD-ROM containing all units in the curriculum volume. The presentation can be made in the classroom by individual teachers or docents, in school assemblies, or in any format chosen by the school. An audio CD with musical examples accompanies each PowerPoint® unit. To help teachers understand the context of musical examples, lesson plans and a Reference Guide accompany each CD.

In February 2005 CAMA initiated discussions with area elementary schools interested in participating in the program. Concurrently, CAMA initiated development of a docent program through which trained CAMA volunteers go to partner schools to present the curriculum. Other schools present CAMA's curriculum with their own docents. Schools participating in the program since 2005 have included Brandon (Goleta), Canalino (Carpinteria), César Chávez Charter (Santa Barbara), Cleveland (Santa Barbara), Goleta Valley Junior High, Harding (Santa Barbara), Jonata (Buellton), Kellogg (Goleta), La Patera (Goleta), Montecito Union, Santa Barbara Charter, Santa Ynez Valley Charter, Solvang, and Summerland Schools. More than 1100 students were served by the program during the 2005-2006 school year.

Junior, Middle & High School Concert Ticket Program

Over the past decade CAMA has been steadily expanding its educational role in the community, as the decline of music education in the schools has produced a younger generation with far less exposure to classical music. In October 1990 our Women’s Board began distributing about 50 scholarship tickets per orchestral concert to students from local junior high and high schools. CAMA's Women's Board raises funds and serves area schools on a rotating basis. Sponsor funding helps keep this program strong from year to year.

Youth Audience Development

In 1997 CAMA initiated a nationally unique collaboration with Westmont College, UC Santa Barbara, and Santa Barbara City College through which CAMA provides scholarship tickets for up to 100 students at each college per concert. The colleges organize academic courses whose curricula focus on CAMA's concerts – the composers, pieces, performers, and historical context. These student scholarship programs serve approximately 1,640 students per season in total.

Adult Education

CAMA offers instruction through the Santa Barbara City College Continuing Education Program in a course taught by Dr. David Malvinni. Participants go to lectures, attend CAMA concerts at highly reduced costs and receive study materials relating to each concert. Current CAMA subscribers may attend these lectures at no cost. Lectures are usually scheduled Monday evenings prior to selected concerts, and are held at the Schott Center, 310 W. Padre St. Free parking is available.
