Community Arts Music Association (CAMA) CAMA's MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS CAMA's “Music Matters” is a music education outreach program for Santa Barbara area elementary schools. The above video on the program features program director David Malvinni presenting at La Patera Elementary School in Goleta, CA. Dr. Malvinni presents on music associated with the American West, including Aaron Copland's "Billy the Kid," and Elmer Bernstein's score for "The Magnificent Seven." {stay tuned for the launch of a new Music Matters website...} Now in its tenth year, CAMA's music education program reaches students in over a dozen elementary schools, grades four through six. Consultant musicologist, Dr. David Malvinni created the three-year twenty-four-unit systematic curriculum package entitled A Classical Music Journey for Young People. This program combines the study of classical and folk music traditions with performances by musicians demonstrating these traditions to school assemblies. CAMA Docents trained by Dr. Malvinni have delivered this program to the schools for seven years. MUSIC MATTERS: CAMA Brings Music Appreciation to the Schools
The 2011-2012 school year marks the seventh year of CAMA’s Docent Program, now known as Music Matters. The program offers a rich and rewarding experience in music appreciation for docents and students alike. CAMA Docents are each assigned to a particular school, where monthly they present PowerPoint® presentations on Music Appreciation. Dr. David Malvinni, the creator of the CAMA Music Appreciation Curriculum, trains docents in sessions focused on the content of each of the school year’s 8 units and on the technical know-how for giving a successful PowerPoint® presentation. Each classroom teacher receives examples of the music of each genre studied, which can be played for students during the month of the presentation. To supplement the curriculum, two music assemblies are scheduled during the school year, which give students a “live” listening experience. The entire curriculum, divided into three volumes, allows for three consecutive years of music appreciation, designed for the elementary school grades four through six. In addition, the first volume has been enhanced with material relevant to junior high school Social Studies classes. During the 2010-2011 school year over 40 classrooms in Santa Barbara county received this music appreciation program in grades four through six. CAMA is seeking to recruit additional volunteer docents. If you have a love of classical music and believe you would be comfortable talking to students (age 9-14), you are invited to contact us. If you would like to observe an actual classroom presentation or attend a docent meeting, please also contact us. Docents will have the chance to expand or refine their own knowledge of music and to enrich the cultural and artistic educations of Santa Barbara-area students.
CAMA's Ticket Program for Young Student Musicians brings approximately 30 students per concert to selected CAMA performances. CAMA's College and University Program collaborates with UCSB, Santa Barbara City College and Westmont College to bring approximately 130 students per performance to selected International Series concerts. The colleges offer classes and preparation, each in their own way. Two colleges offer academic credit for preparing for, attending and reporting on the concert experience. CAMA's Adult Education Program, in cooperation with Santa Barbara City College’s Continuing Education Program, offers Preview Lectures by Dr. David Malvinni and concert attendance through discounted tickets to selected CAMA concerts for up to 40 students. CAMA is supported by music lovers
