CAMA ENDOWMENT CAMPAIGN Bringing the World of Music to Santa Barbara
The CAMA Endowment Campaign recognizes CAMA's legacy of bringing the finest music in the world to the Santa Barbara community, with joyful anticipation of even more rewarding years of great music to come!
In this Endowment Campaign, the friends of CAMA are raising $6.7 million to build a solid financial endowment supporting CAMA and its ongoing programs.
"In my years as Music Director with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, some of my favorite concerts outside of Los Angeles are the ones we have given in Santa Barbara with the Community Arts Music Association."
– Esa-Pekka Salonen, Honorary Chair, CAMA Artists Honorary Committee
Letter from the Campaign Chairs
Dear Friends,
For more than 90 years Community Arts Music Association (CAMA) has immeasurably enriched our community by presenting the finest orchestras, conductors and soloists to Santa Barbara.
But gone are the days when an organization like CAMA could survive from season to season solely on ticket sales and annual contributions. In today's world, endowment reserves are required to meet steadily rising production costs, artist fees and funds to sustain CAMA's outstanding education programs.
Please join us in helping to ensure the legacy of world-class music here in Santa Barbara for generations to come. We urge you to contribute to the CAMA Endowment Campaign and thank you, in advance, for your generosity.
For more than 90 years Community Arts Music Association has brought virtually every world-renowned orchestra, conductor and soloist to perform in Santa Barbara.
There can be no other community of Santa Barbara's size that offers such quality and range of performers on its stages. CAMA's annual seasons of superb music have become an indelible part of our community's cultural life.
The past roster of performers is a "Who's Who" of the classical music world, with dazzling local appearances by musical legends such as Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Rubinstein, Cliburn, Bernstein, Casals, Ormandy, Szell and von Karajan.
Thanks to CAMA, the superstars of today continue to appear on our local stages, as do the greatest orchestras from around the globe.
The musical legacy we have been given by past generations is immense. But CAMA is not resting on its laurels. The financial cost of bringing these great performers to our community continues to grow. The "gap" between ticket income and performance expenses continues to widen. Artist fees alone have nearly quadrupled in the past 20 years.
With the community's help, CAMA is fully committed to protecting this legacy for our children and future generations. The CAMA Endowment Campaign is a major part of that commitment.
"Community Arts Music Association's record of bringing the great orchestras and artists of the world to Santa Barbara...is a remarkable accomplishment."
– Pinchas Zukerman
The $6.7 million CAMA Endowment Campaign ensures that great music and world-class artists continue to grace Santa Barbara's stages for decades to come, and guarantees that children and adults alike will benefit from music education programs.
Continuing to attract artistic talent of the highest caliber will be a major benefit of the Endowment.
• The steadily rising expense of bringing celebrated orchestras and artists to Santa Barbara far exceeds ticket sales revenue. A stable and reliable source of supplementary income from the Endowment will help solve this problem and will allow CAMA to continue presenting great performances and renowned artists.
• The Endowment will allow CAMA patrons to create a meaningful legacy in their name, or in honor or memory of a loved one, that perpetuates their appreciation of CAMA's mission.
Education programs, so vital to the cultural development of our youth, will receive guaranteed support.
• CAMA's highly successful education programs for college and high school students will now be braced with a stable source of assured funding from an endowment to insulate them against perilous economic cycles.
• Income from the Endowment will also allow CAMA to provide new educational and outreach programs for a wider audience.
"We are enormously grateful to CAMA and to the donors {who} give our students the chance to hear world-class musicians and music, and it has inspired us to think of new ways in which we can involve students in the arts."
– Dr. David Marshall, Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts, UCSB
CAMA's Music Matters: Elementary School Outreach and Docent Program
CAMA developed an in-classroom music appreciation program for grades 4 through 6, adaptable for use in Junior High, which is now conducted in more than a dozen Santa Barbara County schools. The docent-led curriculum focuses on musical styles, history and diversity.
Junior, Middle & High School Concert Ticket Program
For well over a decade tickets have been distributed annually to junior high and high school students, and young student musicians. This valuable program often provides students with their first live concert experience.
CAMA's College and University Program
CAMA's Youth Audience Development program is a collaboration with UCSB, Westmont College, Allan Hancock College and Santa Barbara City College. Their students receive tickets to selected CAMA concerts to introduce and expose them to great music. Some schools award academic credit for participation in the program.
Adult Education
In partnership with Santa Barbara City College's Continuing Education program, CAMA offers pre-concert lectures and discounted tickets to selected concerts as part of a special music course. CAMA subscribers may also attend these lectures.
CAMA Website and Program Notes
Comprehensive program notes are mailed to subscribers in advance of each concert and may also be accessed on this website.
"CAMA exposes young people to a world of music, right here at home. Their ticket programs allow children of all ages to personally experience great artistry and our musical heritage. These programs must continue in order to build the classical music audiences of the future."
– Stephen & Carla Hahn, Endowment Campaign Honorary Chairs

"Ticket sales alone don't cover the costs of bringing world-class artists to Santa Barbara. This gap between revenues and production costs is ever widening. That's why CAMA's Endowment Campaign is so important – it will be a 'stop gap,' so to speak. Bravo to CAMA for the terrific performances over the years."
– Edward & Sue Birch, Endowment Campaign Honorary Chairs
